Oh, and if you need the functionality and behavior, then by all means file a
feature request against Cocoa for it, too.  If we all whine and cry, maybe
they'll "go public" with it.  (I'll not hold my breath, though.)

Menu extras do indeed function as well in Tiger as they did in
Panther, provided you code them cleanly and correctly. That's not to
say using private APIs is smart as it may arbitrarily change at some
point, but if you need the functionality and behavior then brave the
rapids my friend :)
