For status information, display it visually with your dock icon.

Adium is a good example of how this can work well.

I am already rendering 2-3 characters of text (temperature) on a dock icon
in one app, but now I would like to display about 12-15 characters (a
truncated file name) from another app, and rendering into the dock icon
won't work well for that. Writing text into the dock menu is the next best
alternative, but of course that requires a click to see. That's why getting
at the mouseover text would be appealing. Minimized documents put up a dock
mouseover name (usually the window title), so I was hoping there was some
mechanism to fiddle with this in apps. I'm almost certain I came across
something once, but can't find it now.
