Malcolm just told me that in the modern 21 century english the use of vodka is inappropriate, because could be related to russians while I was talking to ukrainians. Herewith I apologize to all of you who feel strong about naming national alcoholic beverages in this forum.

Umm, I wrote (off-list) "I think this is just an unfortunate situation where your comment has been misinterpreted" and that knowing you personally I don't believe a slur was intended, but suggested that nevertheless an apology would be appropriate.

Please could we take Georg's apology just as an apology. I appreciate that his intent here was to defuse the situation with humour, but it's another case where it could instead inflame.

As I am myself all too aware, especially without the non-verbal cues associated with a direct social context it is easy to misinterpret the meaning or emotion of an email. If we introduce into this mix words or phrases that could be misinterpreted as being derogatory about a particular group, someone will interpret them that way... I'm not suggesting that we adhere to extremes of political correctness, just that we be sensitive the limitations of the medium.

If you have any comments or concerns, please reply to me ** off-list **.

Please let's return to discussing Cocoa.
