having problem with NSSlider and setAltIncrementValue

I'm having a problem with NSSlider and - (void)setAltIncrementValue:
(double)increment
I set the alt Increment value in awakeFromNIB. When I try to move
the slider with the option key held down, the slider knob locks and
won't move.
The slider behaves normally when the alt/option key is not depressed.
When the alt key is held down and I click in the slider body, the
slider value is advanced by the increment value I supply in
setAltIncrementValue.
I can't find anything in the archives or on google even though it
seems it would be a common enough problem.
Anyone have any hints as to what I'm missing?
