Menu bindings & 'Auto Enables Items' ?

I have a menu which uses Shared Defaults binding for some items, and
the old connected-to-a-custom-controller style for the other items.
The latter set of items require validation, so my menu has Auto
Enables Items ticked, and validateMenuItem: handles the rest.
However, this seems to permanently disable the items that use
bindings - regardless of the Enabled binding, or the validateMenuItem
return value.
Do bindings not play nicely in menus that use 'Auto Enables Items',
or is there something else going on here?
