Uh-oh. First rule: whatever Microsoft does is a very bad idea :)
Second rule: always check the local conventions (which M$ does not
care to). You'll see there's a folder exactly for this in Mac OS X: ~/
Application Support. Create a sub-folder there whose name would be
your application signature (which is better than the widely used
plain app name due to potential clashes), and its inside is
completely yours.
