The consensus right now seems to be that I should use a login item.
I'll post again after I try that and include the code that I use.

Isn't the use of Login Items deprecated in Tiger? For Tiger, the
OP should
be using launchd via /Library/LaunchAgents
IIRC there are some issues with using launchd for agents on Tiger, and
the recommended course of action is still to use login items. I don't
remember the specifics, nor do I know if they have been resolved in a
point updated :)
