Writing directly to other applications preference files is not right either. Just imagine what you would think about someone doing that to your preference files!
Apple's own code is the supported way to solve this problem, and it is certified to be used on all active system versions (10.2, 10.3, 10.4...). Just treat it like one of the other system frameworks that you're using.
Why do you care about how many lines of code it is? If you choose to care about such things, then perhaps you shouldn't be using CFPreferences either? Who knows how many lines of code it's made up of? ;-)
