Value with Pattern quesiton

I'm trying to get a multiple-line result with my pattern but it doesn't seem to be working:

<<%{value1}@:begin>>\n<<%{value1}@:end>>

I assumed displayPattern would support the standard Format strings, but \n doesn't appear to be recognized. How do I insert a return in the result?
