The standard way I do this is to create a folder called ".background"
and place the background image there, in the DMG. This folder is
hidden in the finder. Then I get info and set the background picture
and use cmd-shift-G to enter the path
"/Volumes/MyDMG/.background/background.png" to set the background
image. I then position my icons and window size correctly, then
unmount the DMG and create a compressed read-only copy.
However, if you're looking for a tool to automate this (my automation
is a shell script that swaps out the app with the newest build and
re-copies the DMG), you might look at Filestorm. I've never used it,
but I've heard good things about it.
I'll vouch for FileStorm; I use it, and it's a good application.
I don't work for MindVision :).
