check status of secure webpage?

Does anybody know of an easy way to check the status of a webpage that first requires a username/password to access it? I'm trying to do this to write a tool that can show the bandwidth usage for people whose ISP limits them to a certain amount each month, though this could prove to be useful for other tasks as well.
