Thank you all for the answers you sent they were very helpful. Also the two articles at MacDevCenter and StepWise are great and I would recommend anyone else trying to understand memory management in Cocoa to read them.

Funny, now that I fixed my code with the new insights gathered the application doesn't crash anymore.
