The only idea I can come up with is perhaps your class has an instance method setProgress: expecting a string or some other kind of object (which is perhaps meant to be used by another of your objects to set the progress text or something) which sends a copy or length message to its argument. That method would be called via KVC when the nib is loaded, but with the NSProgressIndicator as the argument, so you end up trying to copy that. If that is the case then the simplest solution would be to rename either your setProgress: method or your progress outlet.
