You're aware that, as you shrink the font panel, it simplifies itself
to something closer to what you describe? At its smallest, it just
shows family, face, and size. At its largest, notice the split pane
control at the top where you can open a preview. If you shrink it while
the preview is open, you get both the preview and the popup menus.
