Off topic, but bears on why I bother to do this at all...
I was reading in Wired about NASA's World Wind
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.03/start.html?pg=7
a program for displaying Earth imagery. When I went to the program's web site
http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
I was disappointed to see that, while the project is open source, it is written
in C# for DirectX. As for Mac - anyone who wants to try and port it using Mono
is welcome to. Their justification is 1) we only had one programmer and
had to get something out quickly and 2) MS owns 95% of the universe. A forum
where the programmer defends this is here:
http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/forums/index.php?showtopic=8&st=0&p=17&#entry17
including the line "
Microsoft ownes greater than 95% (or so) market share with personal computers."
I get similar stuff from some friends and relatives - why am I writing something for such a tiny
audience ?
The methodology of that number is, of course, suspect - most of the time I see something like that quoted
it is based on sales and unweighted by how long different groups typically hold on to a machine.
But beyond that, unless you are writing enterprise software, it is simply the wrong statistic.
For example, there is an interview with Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen on CNET:
http://news.com.com/Adobe+versus+the+world/2008-1082_3-5586294.html?tag=nefd.ac
In the interview he notes that while, as an absolute percentage of their business it is shrinking as they
go into the enterprise software market, at present 25% of their business comes from Mac owners.
So the question: does anyone have, or have a pointer to, Mac market share broken down
by use or field - home, education, graphic arts, photography, music, science, etc. ?
Thanks,
Bob Clair
