Because you have failed to provide the name of the app in question I'm
unable to provide you with the source of it's distribution.
Like many people on mailing lists, you seem to lack the ability to
provide a short conclusive response and find it necessary to provide
information that doesn't help trace the source of your problem.
Your cloak and dagger of this conversation isn't helping you, I'm
confident that I can provide the source of distribution if I know the
name of the app in question and I am willing to discuss the matter
publicly on this list.
If you're looking for public help on this, I'm more than wiling to
assist for free, if you want private help, I'm certain there are many
private investigators who would be willing to assist you and the yellow
pages would be a place to locate one otherwise, write to the list and I
will respond to the list as soon as I obtain the distribution
information you are requesting.

My app is shareware and a user's authentication code became
public a while back. It was immediately disabled in the
application and the user given a special replacement code
(it wasn't the user's fault that the original code was made
public). However it appears that someone is hosting an
earlier version of the application which the disclosed code
still works with (don't ask how I know... I just do ;-) ).
Sounds like people should watch more carefully what this application
does when connected to a network :)
I can't find out where it is being hosted, it is probably beyond
the sight of Google inside some zipped-up download. I know
of one crackz site but it isn't hosting it so I'm wondering if
someone could contact me off list with some other likely
candidates to go looking at.
What's the name of the app???
Google
<http://www.google.com/search?q=tim+hewett+shareware&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF
-8>
says that he is probably the author of DV Backup.
Yes I am the author of DV Backup and an authentication code has
been made public as described. If you need to convince yourself
that I am who I say I am (I can understand that you might think I am
someone trawling for info on hackz, crackz, warez etc.) then send
an email to email@hidden and I'll forward it back to you.
Regarding my original question, any information on who might be
hosting the old version of my app (or, at least, where to start
looking)
would be happily received.
The reason why I know that people are still able to use the public
authentication code is that I keep getting support requests from
people who find it doesn't work with the current release and then
say they found an old release that it works fine with. They won't
tell me where they found it - so honour does exist amongst thieves
after all.
