Saving, file types, and non-document-based apps

Hello. I've been digging around all day on this--going a little nuts.

I'm trying to save files from a non-document based app. The files are xml files. When i do the simplest thing using NSData's writeToFile and add the xml extension I end up getting XML Plist files according to the finder. When I double click them it opens the plist editor. These, however, are not plist files.

Ideally, I would like the files to have a custom document icon so it is clear they cam from my application. After messing around with the info.plist and nsfilewrapper most of the day, I just can't figure out what is going on. Am I missing something simple? BBEdit xml files seem to work like this.

Thanks
