Help please - Service windows won't become 'key'

OK, this is driving me completely nuts...

I have a service can display a sheet with a text field or an NSSavePanel. I finally got these to display over the invoking app window but I have one final problem...and its a biggie:

All keypresses still go the the invoking app window rather than the service window.

For example, one case is an NSSavePanel. If I try to type in a file name, what I type replaces the selection in the invoking app, it does not show up in the entry field in the panel.

I have tried various combinations of 'makeKey', forcing the service to the top, etc all with no effect on this problem.

Any ideas, pointers, or even wild conjecture would be most welcome.
