Chess: signifies altered API?

Hello,

If one runs the old (pre-Panther) Chess.app on a Panther system (well, when I run it on mine), the chess pieces are all black holes in the UI. The design of the old UI was to composit each piece's image from out of a single TIFF file that had all the images in it - you know, the old standard way....

I'm wondering if there was an API change that made this design less viable under Panther? (Incidentally, the board highlighting effect is also broken, in a seems-like-a-compositing-issue way...)

Thanks,
Chris
