Best way to convert audio to other formats?

I would like to take ay audio file supported by QuickTime and convert it to a snd (and keep the snd in memory, not write it back out to a file), and I'm trying to find the best way to do this. There is probably a call somewhere in sound manager, but is there anything in Cocoa/CoreAudio that could handle this?
