Popup buttons, icons, and bindings

This is probably a FAQ, and if it is I apologize, but as usual a search has turned up nothing useful.

I have a popup menu whose content is bound to an NSArrayController. Nothing unusual there, I'd imagine. My question is this: How can I modify the array in such a manner that NSPopUpButton will set the icon of each menu item as well as the title? Or, if that's not natively supported, what's the simplest way to subclass NSPopUpButton to do it?

And on a side note that isn't relevant, why must I create an NSArrayController and bind it to my NSObjectController, instead of binding the content binding directly to the array key on the object controller? The array isn't mutable and all, so the services of a full controller aren't needed. Oh well.
