Desktop Icon position

I hope someone can help me on either of these lists.

What I need to do is find a way to get the position of an Icon that is on the desktop. When I get coordinates of a file on the Desktop I get the coordinates of the icon in the Desktop folder, not the position of the icon on the desktop. I looked into this a few years ago and if I remember correctly to do this I would have had to use Applescript to get the coordinates of an icon on the desktop. Is this correct? And if so is it still the only way to do this? If not how can I do it?

Thanks,
Scott Mitchell
