First of all, I agree very much with Evan that a good download/install will
not leave a trail of junk which the user must clean up manually. Using a
dmg is bad because it requires the user to (a) delete the dmg and (b) eject
the dmg.

Again, more layers of packaging, more confusion for the user. I would like
to simply put my app in a folder with a ReadMe and wrap it once, in a bz2.
However, since my web server is my personal web space on Earthlink, I
believe I have no control over the mime type mappings. In particular, a
".bz2" does not work.
After some "google research" I believe the high-reliability answer is to
have the download link launch a cgi or php script which will in turn start
the download. I'm going to try and learn how this is done.
