Expanding/shrinking middle of window

  • Subject: Expanding/shrinking middle of window

I have experience in growing and shrinking an entire window, but I now want to be able to have the window grow and shrink to reveal some extra windows in the middle of the window. The best example of this effect is the Open/Save Dialog box (at least in Mac OS 10.2), where pressing the blue arrow shows or hides the file tree/navigator. This is the type of effect I want to create by allowing the program to either show or hide information (such as form fields) which are contained in the middle of the window.
