You asked about a free way to get those type of buttons, so I thought you might want to know about one.

If Apple sets trends like this, I don't see why they don't make them accessible to developers;

I'm pretty sure they will - once they decided on a final design. Mac OS X is moving to be resolution independent, after all, so bitmaps won't cut it in the long run.

So ... the ability to do this all with Core Graphics and have it automagically scale when I arbitrarily resize it in IB is invaluable [...]

Well ... that's what my button classes do. I feel like I did somehow miss your point ... (?)
