If you're talking about a client from behind a firewall, the only way to
ensure you have the public IP is to visit some external site and check
(e.g. whatismyip.com). Any other way is prone to odd failures (e.g. being
behind TWO firewalls, which can happen).

It's not a cocoa problem specifically, btw.
