I have not seen an alternative to using a bridge or pure C library
just yet.  Using pure C would be quite painful.

I never looked at WebObjects.  Is there anything in there that would
allow communication to a SOAP back-end?

Still seems that using the Java bridge purely for this communication
is the easiest path.  This is assuming that the Java bridge survives
the Intel switch.
