I could quit the app via the dock icon just fine. So maybe it was only the animation timer that somehow did stop.

The quoted kernel stuff would then be the normal run loop; is that possible?

Anyway, I'll investigate further and ask again when I'm more confident about the actual problem. Terribly sorry for wasting your time ...
