Hi
We are a small group of people formerly involved in the Modula2 ISO standard and we have started a discussion about creating a language extension for M2 using the extensions of Objective-C relative to C as a blueprint -- that is to say, *preserving* the Smalltalk derived message passing syntax just as it is in Objective-C instead of overlaying an Algolish syntax like the many Cocoa bridges do. The ultimate aim is of course natively interfacing with Cocoa and GNUstep.
I don't think there will be many on this list who would disagree when I say that the Smalltalk derived message passing syntax in Objective- C has clear advantages and some of the merits of Cocoa's design are diminished if not lost without it.
Anyway, Gaius Mulley, the driving force behind the GNU Modula2 compiler front end for GCC has become interested in the idea and we are discussing the possibility of adding the extensions to the GM2 compiler. A discussion paper has been drafted and we exchange ideas and opinions by email. At some point we will probably set up a mailing list.
We'd like to invite people seriously interested to join the discussion at first and the project afterwards, should it emerge. One note of caution to feature-maniacs though ... We did learn our lesson during the ISO standardisation -- too many folks couldn't resist adding more and more features, bloating an otherwise lean and clean language in the process. We want to keep it lean and clean and only add equivalents to what has been added to C to get Objective-C.
With that in mind, people who are interested, please contact us at email@hidden
thanks and regards
