While I generally agree with this, there are situations where hiding
a control is the "right thing to do".
Consider a window that (among other things) has a progress bar that
sometimes shows that something is being done. You wouldn't always
want it visible, especially if you're using that area as a status
area as well.
Let's say that the operation is a download. While downloading, you
show the progress bar with a stop button. When the download is
complete, the progress bar and stop button are replaced with a bit of
text indicating that the download was successful. Safari's download
window is an example of this kind of design, and it works well.
