Are you removing the status item? [[NSStatusBar systemStatusBar] removeStatusItem:myStatusItem];

I've said status so many times the word has lost all meaning. Jiminy Jillickers!

Ack, at 6/4/05, Philip George said:

When an NSStatusItem quits or is otherwise removed from the menu bar, other NSStatusItems that were sitting to its left, do not scoot over, leaving a big hole where the removed status item once sat.

What can I do to play nicely and clean up after myself, so that the remaining NSStatusItems will scoot to the right after I remove myself from the menu bar?

I've noticed that switching apps -- and thus switching menu bars -- causes all the remaining NSStatusItems to scoot to the right, filling the hole.

How can I trigger that same behavior as I quit my app?

Note that my app does not have a visible menu in the menu bar. It runs as LSBackgroundOnly .
