I don't think the first will work. If you cut&paste you'll lose the
outlets, bindings, etc. You can however drag items out of the tab view.
Do a click and hold, until you see a shadow below the selection, then
drag to wherever.

"unpack subviews" item is always grayed out. If I delete the group,
