First, I appreciate all the input people have given over the last
several weeks as I began to teach myself Cocoa/Obj-C and Core Data.
As a demo, I worked on a sample program that allows you to organize a
set of objects (people in this case) into manual and smart playlists,
and also have interactive attribute based browsing, and still keep
the searchbox functional. Drag and drop is used to establish
connections between objects and playlists.
It really is easier to see than to explain, but it is somewhat like
iTunes with browsing mode turned on.
There is a screenshot on my website that will demonstrate the idea
better than I can with words, and even better is to use the demo.
Caveats
I am sure there are some (many? ;) memory issues and welcome
comments for making the code more robust. The code is pretty simple,
but can use some more documentation. But it does demonstrate some
pretty simply concepts that could easily be reworked into a fairly
complicated program.
I hope this can help someone. Take it for what it's worth. ;)

Thanks again to everyone who has offered advice and answers!
