Does it count as "Very Strange" if he's working with large existing
codebases full of Java code? :)
Seriously, I'd think that the #1 reason for people to use Java is
that they already have a lot of Java code and they just want it to
work on OS X.

Posting such a statement to a list of Cocoa developers simply
*begs* for a response, so I'll happily oblige. If performance
really is at the crux of your issue, of *course* you should switch
to Objective-C. Unless you're doing something Very Strange (TM),
you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain by porting.
If you start with ObjC now, you can have your app ported and know
a much better language for OS X applications by then for sure.

Side Note: If I have to port my app to Objective-C to reach
nativeness, it's "okay." But I hope to be told to do so as soon as
possible b/c I'd then better begin this port right *now*.
Fortunately
Apple gave me quite some time before mid-2006 to think about some
"Plan B" if Cocoa-Java can't provide me such a thing…
