I used Preview.app as a test (changed the value of that key to 10.5.0). Same results as with 10.3.x and 10.4; app doesn't launch and you get a "RegisterProcess failed (error = -50)" in the console log.

What I was doing is "editing the bundle in-place". i.e. show the package contents and directly editing the Info.plist file.


A critical step then needs to take place in order to re-register the app with Launch Services. It was pointed out to me that the easiest thing to do is the following from Terminal:

touch /Applications/Preview.app

Once I did this and launched Preview, I then got the appropriate 'can't run this app' dialog.
