I guess I wasn't being clear exactly what I was asking (and it may
not have been in spirit with the original question.)
Is there an appropriate way to do somethingn like Xcode's open
quickly panel with a spotlight query, given that the user is likely
to type Filename.extension into the edit field, and the software
won't know if the extension was hidden for that particular file?
Searching by fsname works, but is slow for the reasons you mention.
