inset/offset path algorithm

in illustrator, there is an "offset path" option for shrinking or
growing a vector polygon.
in fireworks it's called "inset path," but it does the exact same thing.
does anyone know of an algorithm i could use to do this with
nsbezierpaths?
i figured one out already myself using a pen and sketchpad, but i'd
rather use a proven/standard algorithm if such a thing is already out
there available to use.
