By using a modal dialog for data entry the users assembles a collection of changes and then submits them to the app.
But you can do the same thing in a master-detail interface, or am I still missing something?
This does seem to be an answer that satisfies the guidelines - when the editing 'detail' part is active the 'master' list becomes 'slightly modal', in that some actions are no longer permitted but some (scrolling, view options) are still available. It should also be possible to have different detail panes slide up for different actions. I'll need to make sure that the entry being edited isn't concealed by the detail pane appearing, but that should be possible with some scrolling. I think that having the detail pane slide down from the top might give a better layout as people seem to prefer things at the top of a window. Sort of like a sheet that pushes the master list down as it appears.
Thanks to all who have replied on this and the related threads, it's given me some food for thought. Apologies for my argumentative style, it's my age you know.
