Sorry - I was responding to your "to do just about any totally basic
trivial thing, [...] I must subclass something" - not to the specific
examples you gave. I.e. you should find that almost all basic things
can be done without subclassing. Subclassing is an exceptional case.
Perhaps you were merely overstating your case for effect.
