No binding for plain old string in NSTextView?

I see attributedString - this doesn't appear to be happy being bound to an attribute that returns a plain old string.

valueURL, doesn't fit.

Played with valuePath but the little tool tip is cryptic. "Specifieds the path of the content of the bound NSTextView". Path? What kind of path? File path? Key path? Its totally not clear.

Is there a way to do this? After a week of more or less zero progress with master-detail controller setups, I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that they are a huge time sink. You can't debug the bindings in any kind of sane way like you can if you write your own and I can write a custom one in under an hour.
