I have no insider information.
My interpretation was that the "Cocoa" name was a play on the other
object-oriented language/framework that most developers are familiar
with, "Java." (They're both hot caffeinated beverages.)
If Apple were going to name it again today I suspect they would
choose something different. Java was much more "in" back when OS X
first came out and Jobs was promising everybody first-class Java
support out of the box. Nowadays Java's more of an "important niche"
thing--if you write business apps, it's great, but desktop users
don't see much Java stuff day-to-day--and Apple is recommending Cocoa
for everyone and downplaying the whole Java thing. (Goodbye Cocoa-
Java frameworks!)
