Never tried with NSOutputStream myself, but generally you can
subclass clusters *without rewriting any functionality at all*, just
implementing the primitive methods using an embedded object (in other
words, all of the reimplementations are plain and easy one-liners).
Agreeably it is somewhat inconvenient compared with "normal"
subclassing, *but* it is quite far from being a bane.
I do agree though that using a cluster for a class which is to be
subclassed daily is not a great design idea.
(Unless, of course, the "subclassing" actually means "making new
hidden subclasses of yours", in which case it would be all right. As
said, so far I haven't played with NS*Streams, so can't say which
case it is there.)
