IIRC, if you write a custom cell, you don't get it selected automatically. I had to fight with that when I started working on getting UKFinderIconCell to work in table views... <whines>still not finished ...</whines>

NSMatrix is also surprisingly easy to use. You can add new cells and remove old ones fairly easily. But I think it works best if all cells are of the same type. It will get a tad more annoying if you want each column to be a different cell type. But only a tad.
