I have to say, I've wondered about that. In a predominantly
Windows office,
we're all a bit confused as to why Apple left such an enormous time
between
announcement and delivery of the Intel systems, given that
supposedly "they
work today".
The machines run, but...
- the chips Apple really wants to ship aren't really ready yet
- it doesn't work with any beefy video cards yet, just Intel
integrated video
- the software is not yet optimized to the same level as the PowerPC
code (the Accelerate library still has huge swaths of boring scalar
code in it where it should have SSE, for instance)
- developers need hardware, tools, and lead time in order to make
their apps native
It wouldn't be wise for Apple to ship a box until all of these points
are addressed. And once you start working on these things--
particularly the final bullet point--the cat's out of the bag :)
There's only so much you can do in one building without working with
the outside world.
I don't have any insider info but I would think that Cocoa on XP
would be equivalent to Apple committing suicide. That's the crown
jewels.
