Thanks, I will try that out.  I still don't understand the reason that
the "New" menu item (which is targeted at the first responder) is not
being validated through the presence of the newDocument: method in the
responder chain.  The instance of the subclass responds to the
newDocument: method.  Is the behavior I am expecting specific to
"Document-based applications"?  And what is the difference between the
two types of applications as far as the NSApplication instance?  I
have a program written from awhile back and I can't figure out how I
am getting the "New" menu item validated there but not in my new
project referenced here.  I don't think that was a "Document-based
App".
