I found the answer.

If you have a CFBundleDocumentTypes dictionary in Info.plist, it will open a
new document upon launch or reactivation unless you implement these methods
in the NSApp delegate:

// Prevent opening of new document when app is launched:
BOOL applicationShouldOpenUntitledFile:(id)sender
{
    return NO ;
}

// Prevent opening of new document when app is re-activated
- (BOOL)applicationShouldHandleReopen:(NSApplication *)theApplication
hasVisibleWindows:(BOOL)flag
{
    return NO ;
}
