Pro-App Look

Does anyone have any general advice/strategies on obtaining that pro app look such as Motion and Final Cut Pro?
At this point the only thing I've heard is one of the developer's from Pixar said in his WWDC 2005 presentation that to achieve that look they did tons of subclassing.
