IB and nibtool unable to open AppKit nib files

I'm trying to learn some gui tricks from Apple by opening nib files contained in the AppKit. First, I copy the nib in question to the desktop so as to not mess up the original then try to open it with IB and I get the error "The document 'NSxxx.nib" could not be opened. Trying to open the same file in nibtool yeilds the error "nibtool: could not load 'NSxxx.nib': Unable to initialize classManager IBClassData."

I checked my system through "software update" and 5 have the latest versions of everything.

Given these errors, does anyone know how I could go about opening these nibs in both IB and nibtool?
