The easiest way to get this figured out is for you to devise the smallest project that demonstrates the problem and send it to me off-list. The "similar problem" you allude to was in fact a reasonably complicated project that relied on lots of Core Audio to do processing. The QTKit parts of his app seemed to work fine.
