Thanks for all the answers!  I think I understand it now.  The thing I wasn't sure on were the strings being passed to my methods.  I wasn't assigning them to another string or another value, basically just testing against their values, nothing more.  And the strings that I create inside the methods I know how to handle as well.  Thanks again for all the tips (and the links), I think I'm good to go.
